The Collie and Mackenzie statue is a tribute to the mountaineering partnership between Professor Norman Collie and John Mackenzie. They made numerous first ascents of summits and rock routes in the Cuillin during the latter part of the 19th century.
Norman Collie, a scientist specialising in chemistry, was born in Alderley Edge near Manchester. He was first inspired to tackle the Cuillin during a fishing trip to Skye with his brother in 1886.
John Mackenzie, a local guide and crofter, was born in the small crofting township of Sconser. He had first climbed Sgurr nan Gillean when he was just 10 years old.
The statue dedicated to these mountaineers has been unveiled in Glen Sligachan, which splits the Black Cuillin from the smaller hills of the Red Cuillin. The statue was made by local artist Stephen Tinney and cast in bronze in a foundry in Ireland. The sculpture represents mountaineering both past and present as the Cuillin continues to draw climbers from around the world. The statue was positioned and unveiled on a rocky knoll opposite the Sligachan Hotel, overlooking the Cuillin Hills in September 2020. The project to erect this statue and memorial took ten years and raised £320,000
